Soldering Tips and Tricks for Working from Home

Put your soldering struggles behind you with a set of troubleshooting tips and tricks geared at helping you take charge of your torch and torch setup. Learn numerous ways to implement new torch skills and even how to properly manage your own soldering torch and tank, in this one-day workshop which cover basic to advanced soldering fundamentals. Several flame working methods and techniques will be introduced, from different types of solder joints to unique ways of connecting hard to reach seams. This workshop is ideal for anyone seeking to improve their skills at the torch, brush up on soldering know-how, and gain confidence working with heat!

Students are invited to bring in any soldering projects or soldering setups that may be daunting or unapproachable for a step-by-step tutorial on how to most effectively approach them. Acetylene, oxy-acetylene, oxy-propane, and multiple butane torches will be covered in class. Suggestions on how to cater a home studio soldering setup to your own unique needs will be given.

Meet the instructor

Joy Raskin has been a silversmith since 1984 and has exhibits throughout the United States, Ireland and New Zealand, showcasing both her jewelry and flatware designs. Joy is a native of New Hampshire, having attended public schools in Manchester and Concord and was accepted as a member of the League of NH Craftsmen while still in high school. She received her BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and her MFA from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. Joy is an instructor at Metalwerx in Waltham, MA, The Craft Center in NH, Sharon Art Center, and many other schools.

Joy has received many awards for her work. She was commissioned by the NH State Council on the Arts to create the Cultural Access Award for the Governor’s Awards in the Arts in 2001. Her work is included in many collections, including the White House and Smithsonian Institution. Joy's work is found in multiple galleries throughout New England, including the League of NH Craftsmen Galleries, Boston Society of Arts & Crafts, Guilford Art Center, Millbrook Gallery, and others.

 

 

Materials & Tools

There is a $25 materials fee for this workshop that is payable upon registration. The materials kit covers plenty of copper and brass, sheet and wire solder in varying specification, as well as a lab fee for numerous types of gases to practice all necessary workshop exercises. 

Students should bring
  • any problem soldering jobs
  • any work that needs multiple torches to get soldered
  • any project designs that need soldering suggestions
  • any metal from gold, silver, copper, brass, bronze, and nickel
  • soldering setup you aren't sure how to approach
