Bezel Exploration: From Cabochons to Micro Mosaics

Course Description

About this course

Bezel settings are beloved for their sleek design and modern curves, often being featured at the center of jewelry to show off a gems unique qualities. In this one day workshop, student will learn to properly set traditional cabochon stones inside a bezel, as well as how to cut, carve, manipulate, and set their own handmade "gems" using vintage glass, celluloid, and plastic buttons with varying degrees of opacity, texture, and shape. Additional jewelry making techniques will be covered throughout the course, including micro-mosaic patterns using scrap button pieces, riveting, and decorative bezel making using hand files. Come brush up on your basic metalsmithing skills and add another unique facet onto your jewelry making repertoire!

Basic soldering experience required.


Meet the Instructor

Erika Jorjorian

Erika Jorjorian began her foray into jewelry and metalsmithing at the University of the Arts, in Philadelphia PA, earning a BFA from the crafts department in 2004. Her work draws inspiration from growing up in her dad's industrial metal plating shop, city landscapes, old-school hip-hop culture, and the Art Deco era.


Erika’s work can be found at a number of fine craft shows such as the Berkshire Arts Festival, Lenox, Ma, the Holiday Festival of Crafts, Worcester, MA, and the Art Star Craft Bazaar, Philadelphia, PA. She most recently completed a winter residency at the Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina, and teaches beginner to advanced level courses at the Worcester Center for Crafts, and at Snow Farm-the New England Craft School.



Materials & Tools 

There is a $50 materials fee for this workshop payable upon registration. The materials kit includes choice of cabochon stone, fine silver bezel wire, sterling silver sheet and wire, rotary tools, as well as various other materials and tools necessary to complete the project. 

Students should bring 
  • any of their own cabochon stones or unique buttons that they want to learn to bezel set
  • notebook and writing implement
  • any of their own tools that they enjoy using (i.e. hand files, special saw blades, hammers, etc.)

A selection of cabochon stones will be available for use and will be covered by your materials kit fee. The instructor will have buttons for students to use.
