While making a pin or large bead, each student learns how to layer translucent polymer clay to produce a rich depth of surface using image transfers, permanent inks, simple millefiore, gold leaf and powder inclusions, carving, sanding and buffing. The results are very much like enameling in appearance. At the same time, Kathleen presents basic design principles to aid students in making decisions as they work with this involved technique.

Students must have some knowledge of polymer work including use of tools and simple cane work.

Materials & Tools

There is a materials fee $5 payable to the instructor on the first day of class to cover the cost of wet/dry sandpaper, a small v-shaped carving blade, and a #14 exacto blade. Students will be required to bring the supplies listed below with them to class.

Students Must Bring:

  • Pasta machine
  • Tools you normally use including flexi slicing blade, exacto knife, and pin tool. (Pasta machine motors are allowed).
  • Work surface - Metalwerx has 8" x 12" glass surfaces for use during class, but if you prefer something larger, you are welcome to bring your own.
  • Fine/medium sanding sponges (used for drywall from home improvement stores)
  • Sculpey III white: 2 – 2 oz. bars
  • Premo Translucent: 4 – 2oz. bars
  • Premo, Fimo, or Kato: 1 black, 1 ecru, 1 Premo Pearl, and 3 other colors. (I use Premo).
  • Imitation gold leaf (not foil)– can be regular or varigated.
  • Black Prismacolor pencil
  • Prismacolor Marker Colorless Blender
  • 3 Prismacolor or Pantone Markers in colors you like
  • 2 or 3 small jars of fine glitters (not Pearlex powders).
  • Cyanoacrylate glue, both gel and liquid (I use Loctite brand)
  • A used soft toothbrush
  • A couple of small millefiore canes you've made, any type of clay.

If you have the following already (but don't go out and buy), please bring:

  • Other Prismacolor or Pantone permanent markers
  • Prismacolor regular pencils, not watercolor pencils, in various colors
  • Embossing heat gun (can be found at hobby/craft stores)
