This workshop focuses on techniques as methods for adding depth and interest to metal surfaces. Demonstrations include chasing, matting & stamping, etching, roller printing & reverse roll print, Keum-bu, file carving (direct on metal), hammer finishes, file textures, textures made with flex shaft tool accessories, and some mixed metal techniques.

Most of the processes shown are cold with the exception of needing to anneal metal in preparation for adding certain textures and the mixed metal methods.

The class focus is to have all students create samples of each technique as a comprehensive reference for future artwork. Due to the price of gold foil, the Keum-bu will be demonstration only. However, foil will be available for purchase from the instructor if students wish to purchase it at class.

Some silver soldering experience helpful, but not mandatory.

Materials & Tools

There is a materials fee of $50.00 payable to the instructor on the first day of class. The kit includes non precious metals (copper, bronze, brass), etching mordant, use of resist pens, set ups for the etching baths, patterning materials, use of instructors tools (chasing, matting, hammers, etc.), fluxes & solders. Gold foil will also be available for purchase.
