Diamonds in the Rough: Setting Gemstones on Beach Stones
Instructor: Ms. Leslie Hartwell
Level: Beginner to Intermediate Requirements: Jewelry I or Equivalent Program: Winter Status: Open Length: 2 Days Tuition: $ 380 Materials: TBA Date: March 10, 2012 - March 11, 2012 Time: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM Location: Metalwerx
Juxtapose the precious and the ordinary in a truly unique personal treasure. Students will learn basic lapidary and simple stone setting skills, then combine them to create contemporary jewelry where each element enhances the other.
On the first day, students will learn to drill holes and carve the stones we so often collect as souvenirs. Then line the hole with a sleeve of silver to make a simple, bold pendant.
The second day will cover bezel setting for small faceted stones (aka tube-setting). Set two small faceted gemstones without struggling to make tiny bezels. These will be used to fabricate a pair of simple sterling earrings.
Round out the weekend by creating a final project where each person will tube-set a genuine diamond into a beach stone to create a beautiful union of nature's treasures. Delight in how each element complements the other and see for yourself why tube setting is the quickest and easiest way to set small stones.
Jewelry 1 is the pre-requisite for this workshop. i.e. students should have successfully set at least one cabochon in a bezel, and be comfortable using a flex shaft and have beginner level soldering experience.
