In this fun and fast paced three day workshop, we will make a classic solitaire ring from start to finish! Start by fabricating a palladium 950 shank to explore the working properties of this unique metal, focusing on its requirements for annealing and soldering. We will then make a tapered bezel setting in 18 Karat yellow gold to fit a 5 mm round stone, and assemble the two elements to make an elegant and simple ring. Finish up the class by setting the stone and completing the project.

This class is filled with lots of practical information to take your work to the next level, and allows you to take a beautiful piece of jewelry home, too!

Materials & Tools

The estimated materials fee of $345 includes Palladium 950, 18k yellow gold, solder, as well as stone setting tweezers and setting burs necessary to make your ring. Due to the volatility of the metals market, the actual cost will be emailed to students a week prior to class, when the metal is ordered. Students can pay for the kit when the arrive at class. Please note that this estimation was based on market prices in June 2010.

Students should bring:

  • One 5 mm faceted round stone: quartz (i.e. amethyst), sapphire, spinel, garnet, or tourmaline are all great options for the beginning setter. Stone must have a hardness of 6 or greater: NO aquamarine, morganite, emerald, or topaz. We are making arrangements to have stones available for purchase for those who are interested.
  • Chain nose pliers
  • sandpaper or finishing films 320 - 800 grit
  • inside ring sanding mandrel (flex shaft or polishing motor mount)
  • Advantedge or other rubber wheels in a variety of grits
  • flex shaft tools they are interested in experimenting with on Au and Pd
  • saftey glasses
  • Optivsor (Metalwerx has these available if you don t have one)
  • Loupe
  • Notebook
