In the course, students will learn all about hinges, hinged closures, and catches that can be used with jewelry as well as boxes. We will begin with basic hinges and then move on to multiple variations for hinged clasps. (Hinged clasps are appropriate for wide chains, leather, and non-metal materials when you want a large, yet flexible clasp.)

In addition, surface embellishments and texturing, will also be covered to give your clasps a more custom look. Other topics include methods for riveting (as a way to join nonmetal materials to metal clasps)and a basic figure 8 safety catch.

Some basic soldering experience is helpful in this class.

You can see more of Joy's work and how she uses hinged clasps in her production line at www.joyraskin.com.

This class is 9 sessions long. Each session is 3 hours. There will no class on October 21, November 11(Veteran's Day) and November 25 (Thanksgiving) If a make-up class is necessary, it will be held on December 16.
