Simple Casting Methods & Explorations
Instructor: Mr. Ian Henderson
Level: All Skill Levels Requirements: Previous metalsmithing experience is helpful but not necessary Program: Summer Status: Closed Length: 3 Sessions Tuition: $ 165 Materials: $ 25 Date: August 03, 2010 - August 17, 2010 Time: Every Tuesday at 10:00 AM - 1:30 PM Location: Metalwerx
Explore the more intuitive, playful side of molten metal!
Casting doesn't always have to be a technical, scientific process. There are ways of working with molten metal that can be playful, spontaneous, and intuitive.
We will develop surprising and beautiful shapes by pouring molten metal into substrates made from everyday materials like rock salt, broom straw, ice water, sand, and cuttlefish bones. By working with the materials' natural tendencies, rather than against them, we can enjoy the benefits of "controlled chaos" to invent structures and surfaces that we might not otherwise be able to design.
Over the course of three weeks, students will use these different materials to produce a range of unusual textures and shapes in metal. These impromptu forms can then be used as the basis for unique and attractive jewelry.
You can see more of Ian's work on his website www.ianhenderson-art.com
This class is 3 sessions long. Each session is 3.5 hours.
