A hand-crocheted chain is perhaps the most supple, beautiful, and unique of all chains a metalsmith can produce. In this class we will learn the art of fabricating a hand crochet chain in fine silver, using a needle.
We will cover in detail all the steps required to accomplish this circular fabrication technique, from making the crochet needle to finishing and completing the chain.
Material presented will include:
• tools and procedure for the circular crochet technique • annealing the crochet structure • drawing and finishing the chain • terminations, clasps, and findings • determining the amount of metal for a project • calculating material costs • selecting and ordering wire • studio organization • record keeping • pricing finished items
Students should have taken Jewelry I or have the equivalent experience for this workshop.
Materials & Tools
Mr. Sturlin will assemble materials kits for students which will include fine silver wire, 2 crochet tools, and a tapered metal spindle.
Students should bring:
-1 pair side-cutting or end-cutting pliers
-1 pair small chain nose pliers
-optivisor w/ #3 lense or reading glasses 200-250
