Casting and Mold Making 202
Instructor: Mr. Ian Henderson
Level: Intermediate and above Requirements: Lost Wax Casting and Wax Working experience strongly reccommend Program: Spring Status: Closed Length: 9 Sessions Tuition: $ 425 Materials: $ 50 Date: April 15, 2010 - June 10, 2010 Time: Every Thursday at 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM Location: Metalwerx
Mold making is a way to generate copies of shapes that you love. Whether you're recreating a favorite piece of jewelry for use in a production line, or creating one-of-a-kind items featuring a repeating motif, the techniques employed are the same, and can save you time.
We will learn how to take a rubber mold from a metal model to create wax copies that can be cast in silver or bronze. In addition to replicating finished pieces for jewelry production, you are encouraged to explore the possibilities of Modular Design: creating components that can be assembled to generate new and interesting forms. Develop a library of shapes to cut, modify, combine, and re-combine to construct more elaborate and varied works. The starting shapes can be simple or complex, handmade or found objects, organic or geometric; you choose the shapes and textures you prefer.
Over nine weeks, students will be exposed to both uses of mold making described above. We especially encourage students to explore the artistic possibilities that can be achieved through modular design.
This class is 9 sessions long. Each session is 3 hours. If a make-up class is necessary, it will be held on June 17, 2010
Materials & Tools
The $50 materials fee, payable when signing up, includes wax, mold making and casting supplies, as well as bronze casting grain. If students wish to cast in sterling silver, the class can coordinate an order together, or bring it on their own. Details will be given at the first class.
Students are encouraged to bring in any small objects that they find visually interesting, particularly metal or stone items which can withstand heat and pressure, or objects suitable for natural burnouts, the metal results of which can then be used in moldmaking. These pieces can be fabricated or found.
