In just one day, students will learn the art of photo-etching brass and copper. Simply stated, this is transferring a photo-copied image to a piece of metal and then etching this piece of metal by floating it in an acid bath. Actually doing it takes many more steps.

With this newly learned skill, they will produce an etched piece that will be attached to the cover of their sketch book. Additionally, while pieces are being etched, students will pierce, saw, and assemble cover plates by sweat soldering metal "cut-outs" to a strip of metal. This, too, will ultimately adorn the sketch book. All that in just a day!

Materials & Tools

The $25 materials fee, payable when signing up, includes metal, chemicals, and other supplies necessary for the process.

Students are required to bring:

  • A sketch book or journal with a not too flimsy cover. A hardbound one is great. The standard leather/pleather bound ones are fine, too, as long as they aren't too flimsy.
  • Fine point Sharpie
  • A black and white picture or graphic no bigger than 6" x 6".
