Forging and Cold Connections: Jewelry in the Style of Alexander Calder
Instructor: Ms. Leslie Shershow
Level: All Skill Levels Requirements: None Program: Summer Status: Closed Length: 3 Sessions Tuition: $ 150 Materials: $ 25 Date: July 07, 2009 - July 21, 2009 Time: Every Tuesday at 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM Location: Metalwerx
Alexander Calder's jewelry is both unique and beautiful. His creations were primarily made of non-ferrous metal wire, forged and flattened into shapes and spirals, and then fashioned together using cold connections.
This workshop is designed for students of any level who wish to make fun jewelry without the use of solder. We will start with thick copper and brass wire, learning to create new and interesting shapes with hammers and stakes. Then, cold connecting techniques such as rivets, staples, tabs, and hooks will be taught in order to bring the forged shapes together. Students will leave the class with a finished piece of jewelry, and knowledge of cold connecting techniques.
NPR did a story about Alexander Caulder's jewelry last July while it was on display at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. You can read more about the artist at this link: "Alexander Calder's Jewelry Gets Its Due, Finally" by Susan Stamberg
Materials & Tools
The $25 materials fee includes enough non-ferrous metal and supplies to complete class projects. If students wish to work in silver, they can supply their own or purchase it from Metalwerx at class.
Students Should Bring:
You must wear close toed shoes in the studio to protect your feet. NO SANDALS PLEASE!
It can get loud when there is a lot of forging going on. Metalwerx has ear protection available, but students are welcome to their own disposable ear plugs if they prefer.
