Granulation and Fusing
Instructor: Ms. Leslie Hartwell
Level: Intermediate and above Requirements: Basic Metalsmithing Skills Program: Summer Status: Closed Length: 2 Days Tuition: $ 395 Materials: TBA Date: August 15, 2009 - August 16, 2009 Time: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM Location: Metalwerx
Fusing is the the joining of two layers of metal using heat without using solder. Granulation is the fusing of tiny spheres of metal onto a sheet of metal, often associated with jewelry of many ancient cultures. This technique requires that the surface temperature of the base plate and the granules reach the melting temperature just long enough to allow for fusion, and a withdrawal of heat soon enough so that the entire piece does not melt . . . a very exciting process indeed!
Classical designs are still popular and are continually being reinterpreted today. However, the technique can be also be used to create very expressive, contemporary work, and can be combined with other techniques such as enameling. With practice, granulation may become a technique that adds new levels of detail, delicacy and texture to your work and may no longer conjure up only the traditional designs of the past.
In this workshop we will be working with fine silver. The first day of the workshop, we will focus on torch control and responsiveness to the changes in the surface of the metal as it reaches fusing temperature. We will learn to make our tiny granules, how to regulate their size and uniformity, and begin to practice fusing.
On the second day, we will develop small sample pieces using the balls of silver you made as well as tiny granules provided in your kit, and adding thin wires, twisted wire, and small shapes to expand the design possibilities of this technique. Instruction in metal preparation; positioning, adhering, and fusing the elements; and evaluating the success of the fusing will covered. It is important to make as many samples as possible without the fear of melting a precious design as this is a skill that requires a lot of practice and focus.
On the third day, we will make a pendant that will incorporate our new skills and solder it to sterling silver to give the piece the strength that fine silver does not provide. Cleaning and polishing will be covered in order to leave with a completed piece you will be proud to wear.
SANDALS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO BE WORN IN OUR STUDIO FOR SAFETY REASONS. Make sure to wear close toed shoes to class!!!
