Stone Setting in Metal Clay

Set stones in Metal Clay! Students will make pieces using bezel setting, metal clay prongs, and channel setting techniques.
The bezel techniques will include utilizing PMC sheet, making metal clay bezel cups and using ready made bezel cups for comparison, and practice the 'twice-fire'method. There will be step-by-step demos of each of these methods, and finished pieces to view as examples. These will be practice pieces to use as a reference for further work.
This workshop is for those with intermediate to advanced metal clay skills--NOT for beginners.
Jeanette is currently the executive director of the International PMC Guild. She teaches classes and workshops across the country and internationally, is a Senior Instructor for Rio Grande, and has just published her second book "Setting Stones in Metal Clay".
SANDALS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO BE WORN IN OUR STUDIO FOR SAFETY REASONS. Make sure to wear close toed shoes to class!!!
Materials & Tools
There is a required $10 materials kit for this class. It is payable to the instructor at the workshop and includes two-part molding compound, supplies for mixing plaster casting materials, and some other miscellaneous items to complete projects.
Optional: Book 'Setting Stones in Metal Clay' from the instructor for $27.50. This book will be used in class. If you already have a copy, please bring it, or you can purchase it at the class.
Students Should Bring:
- PMC Tools including:
- Needle files
- Pliers*
- Side cutter
- Tweezers*
- Sanding Supplies
- Hand Finishing Supplies
- Plastic Sheets - we'll be working in stages so bring at least 8 - 10 sheets approx. 4" square.
- Other tools
- 1.5 mm v-gouge (for carving channels)
- mm gauge or ruler*
- bezel roller or bezel pusher*
- grooved prong pusher*
- Stones:
- at least 5 cabochons - 18mm x 25 mm ovals, or similar size in other shapes.
- 5 faceted, emerald cut, natural peridot stones - 4mm x 6mm
- Metal/Metal Clay/Clay
- at least 1, 18mm x 25 mm bezel cup, fine silver or sterling silver
- PMC +, 28 gr - 5 pkgs
- PMC3, 25 gr - 2 pkgs
- PMC Sheet, 3cm x 12 cm - 1 sheet
- Polymer clay: (2) 2 oz. bricks, any color, but gray is easy to distinguish from metal clay
- Optional:
- Decorative scissors
- Divider
- Texturing tools
*Metalwerx has several of these items on hand, but you'll have to share.
