This class will explore the attributes of the reactive metals titanium and niobium. We will focus mainly on the surface embellishment of niobium, a ductile and easily manipulated metal that is highly anodizable.

Bill will give a series of demonstrations and slide lectures. Students will start by developing color charts and progress to creating highly textured and colored samples. Participants are encouraged to produce materials for later use in finished jewelry. The days will go by quickly with lots of working time and occasional demonstrations.

Topics covered will include: safety, anodizing, masking, selective removal, and graphics. The history and development of Reactive Metals Studio (founded by Bill Seeley) will be presented in slides along with the work of a broad range of artists.

Metalsmithing students at all levels are welcome. Students from other areas may also enjoy the class: painters, graphic artists and engineers.

Materials & Tools

A metals kit will be provided and will include a range of sheet and wire products for exploration. The estimated cost of this kit is $45 and payable to the instructor on the first day of the workshop.
