In this technically focused class we will explore the fundamental techniques involved in setting round faceted stones. Starting with prong setting exercises and progressing to bezels, students will learn to handle stones, cut seats, and set securely. The focus of the class is on the setting process. We will work with commercially available prong settings but you will fabricate your own bezel settings. We will also discuss fabrication of prong settings and flush setting as time allows.

You must have completed a Jewelry II or equivalent level class and feel comfortable with the flexshaft.

Materials & Tools

The materials fee of $75, payable when signing up, includes faceted stones, prong settings (both 14k gold and sterling silver), sterling sheet, stone setting burs, flex shaft accessories, and copper for samples.

Students should bring:

  • #7 Optivisor
  • Sketchbook
  • Assorted small trays (yogurt lids work very well)
  • Good quality chain nose pliers (See page 14 in your Rio Grande catalogue.  They have a good selection ranging from $8 - $30)
  • 3 square escapement of needle file #6 cut

If you have any questions about materials or course content please contact Ann at ann@flyingmarquis.com.
