Mechanisms and Movement
Instructor: Mr. Tom McCarthy
Level: All Skill Levels Requirements: Basic Metalsmithing Skills Program: Spring Status: Open Length: 2 Days Tuition: $ 395 Materials: TBA Date: May 31, 2008 - June 01, 2008 Time: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM Location: Metalwerx
In order to make jewelry wearable it is often necessary to create movable elements, as we see in link bracelets. More importantly these mechanisms can always make the piece more interesting. This workshop will explore some simple mechanics to make things swing back and forth and even spin front to back.
We will start with jump rings and the secret to positioning them exactly where you want. Next we use folding, drilling and sawing techniques on the metal to create simple hinges as well as explore various uses for tubing. You will have fun and lots of samples to take back and use as models to incorporate these concepts into your own work.
Basic metalsmithing skills (sawing and soldering) required.
Materials & Tools
A materials kit will be available for purchase on the first day of the workshop. The estimated cost is $20 and is payable to the instructor on the first day of class. It will include tubing, strip, and wire you will need to make samples of the different hinges as well as some simple tools.
