Form metal anticlasticly and synclasticly, using both hammers and the hydraulic press. Students will be encouraged to explore how the two forming techniques can be combined, and how they can work together.

By understanding how to make anticlastic forms and synclastic forms through both hammering and hydraulic pressing, one can form metal efficiently and creatively. Demonstrations will be such that there will be new aspects for continuing students, while basics are emphasized for new students.

The first four classes will focus on demonstration of a technique and time to learn the process demonstrated. During the next four classes, students will work independently on designs of their own, with demonstrations being dictated by student's interests and needs. The class is appropriate for participants with basic metals skills as well as advanced students.

This class is 8 sessions long. Each session is 4.25 hours. There will be a 15 minute break during each class. There will be no class on October 9, October 30, and November 20, 2007.

Materials & Tools

Students should bring:

  • Students should bring any hammers that they have, such as planishing, forging, and forming hammers.
  • Some people like to bring thin gloves, such as bicycle gloves, to wear while hammering.
  • The "usual" hand tools.---Eg.  Files, saw, saw blades, solder, flux, tweezers, sandpaper, sanding sticks, ruler, paper and pencil, pliers, shears, fine-tipped permanent marker.
  • SAFETY: As always in the studio, each student should have a pair of their own, comfortable, safety glasses and a dust mask. Students should always wear closed toed shoes in the studio, for protection when hot, heavy, or sharp objects fall or are dropped.
