Wire is such a wonderful and flexible material which begs to be worked with beyond the usual twisting or wrapping. This class will cover all textile and basket weaving techniques from the simple tabby weave to twining, triple weave, soumak, coiling and more. Students will explore flat weaving and 3-dimensional forms as well as woven tubes. Knitting techniques will also be covered in order to make woven chains or small vessels. Time permitting; the class will also demonstrate tinkering to expose students to the full range of working with wire.
Joy will also teach tips on soldering woven sections as well as finishing techniques in order to complete proficient and polished work. Wire weaving can be very flexible and lends itself to a wide range of applications from small-scale jewelry to life-size sculpture. Students will be working mostly in copper, brass, but also polymer coated wire and silver. Gauges will be mostly 14g. to 28g. Small beads or glass seed beads can be woven right into the weave so bring some if you wish to try.
You can see more of Joy's work on her website at www.joyraskin.com.
