Jewelry II: Exploring Antique Techniques
Instructor: Ms. Ann Cahoon
Level: Intermediate Requirements: Jewelry I or Equivalent Program: Fall Status: Closed Length: 10 Sessions Tuition: $ 450 Materials: $ 75 Date: September 24, 2009 - December 03, 2009 Time: Every Thursday at 1:30 PM - 4:30 PM Location: Metalwerx
When one looks at the scope of goldsmithing history, soldering is a fairly recent development. Prior to alloying, which made the advancement of soldering possible, there were a number of decorative and additive techniques involving pure metals.
In this class we will explore two wonderful ancient techniques: loop-in-loop chain and keum-boo. Students will learn the fusing and weaving techniques specific to loop-in-loop, and apply them to basic types of chain. Students will also learn to complete the necklace by creating end caps and a clasp.
The second component of the course will explore the ancient Korean technique of Keum-boo, a simple and economical way to add gold to your work. Students will create a pendant so that they can leave the class with a finished necklace that showcases new skills.
This class is 10 sessions long. Each session is 3 hours. There will be no class on November 26, 2009. If a make-up day is necessary, it will be held on December 10, 2009.
Materials & Tools
The $75 materials fee covers what you need to complete in class projects including silver wire and sheet, in addition to pure gold sheet for keum boo.
