In this workshop, we will cover tool steel selection, working, and heat treating. We all will make scribes and stamps, as well as chasing tools, punches, chisels, as time allows. The techniques learned in this class will enable you to make tools to help you tackle a variety of metalsmithing chores in your own studio. We will also cover basic rules for forging metals and discuss safe tool making set up at home.

Chris Ploof will share his suppliers (jewelry and "outside of the box industrial" and tool making expertise. Like all of Chris' classes, expect high energy teaching, lots of information, and a whole lot of fun. Participants will see many demos, and will all get to make more than one of the following: Punches, scribes, stamps, chisel for metal carving and chasing and repousse tools.

If you'd like to see more of Chris's work, please check out his website www.chrisploof.com.

About Chris Ploof's Studio:

This renovated mill in Pawtucket, Rhode Island presents a unique opportunity for students to move from working on small projects using traditional hand tools to working on a larger scale, using manufacturing tools and techniques. These classes will promote safety, allow students to see another well-equipped facility, and provide hands-on experience with tools outside of the normal jewelry realm.

Each class is limited to six students.

Materials & Tools

The estimated materials fee of $100 (payable to instructor first day of class) will include plenty of supplies necessary to produce your own handmade tools in tool and mild steel, as well as covering the cost of quenching mediums and supplies specific to working with steel.

Students should bring:

  • Safety Glasses or prescription eyewear with lenses that meet ANSI safety requirements (In doubt? Check with your Optician)
  • Notebook
  • Pen and/or pencil

Highly Recommended:

  • Saw frame
  • Saw blades (asst sizes)
  • Files (hand and needle)
