Good soldering techniques are the foundation of jewelry and holloware fabrication. Understanding how metal heats and how to make accurate, well-fitting joints are the true secrets of successful soldering.
This 3-day workshop will cover the basics of T joints, butt joints, curved joints, connections and cleanup. We will also learn about sweat soldering, fussy fitting for the best connection, soldering small jump rings to larger cast pieces and silver depletion for embossed surfaces. Students will learn several styles of soldering such as pick style for precision, stick soldering for larger pieces and chip soldering.
We will also cover questions about oxy/fuel gas, torch tips, operation and function of regulators, and overall safety concerning ventilation for your own studios.
Students are encouraged to bring any projects requiring technical guidance to complete.
On the third day, demonstrations in gold granulation, fusing and soldering will be given. Pre-requisite: Basic Soldering Skils
Materials & Tools
A materials kit is available for purchase from the instructor at the workshop. The estimated cost of this kit is $95 but will be based on the current market at the time supplies are ordered.
Materials Kit Contents: Sterling silver: sheet, wire, jump rings, bezel wire, tubing and ear posts. Copper sheet & wire. Brass sheet and wire. Silver solder, jar of flux, solderite board, compressed charcoal block, and drill bits.
Students should bring:
- optivisor
- hand tools (files, pliers, etc)
- any projects you have had difficulites soldering
- good pair of nippers and a flat #2 file
