Jessica Lazarus

As a metalsmith and designer, I am interested in the relationships people have with their jewelry, be it a nostalgic, commemorative or formal connection. This fascination originated in my youth, as I would carefully look through the many kinetic and shiny brooches my mother kept inside her jewelry box. My relationship with these pieces has led me to integrate an array of movable parts ranging from simple hinged elements to complex joints and elegant chains into my jewelry. By including movable elements within the work, I often see a dialogue come alive between the piece and the wearer. This dialogue resonates with me because of its sense of play and personal connection. In choosing materials, I actively combine precious metals, rubber, pastels and a variety of nostalgic objects in order to create a more contemporary and dynamic interplay.

My work also focuses on capturing a "balance" by uniting two opposing parts of my environment: the industrial world with the natural world. I also find "balance" by exploring the connection between childhood and adulthood. I merge nostalgic iconography with mature symbolism, and find inventive solutions within each piece. I enjoy making these works, feeling that they help me stay young at heart. Thinking back to carefree moments in my childhood, I remember drinking hot chocolate and eating candy while talking with family and friends. As I preserve and glorify these memories by encasing objects in resin, I am reminded to stay young at heart. I create these pieces so that the wearer can carry with them that special segment in time as a reminder of the unencumbered happiness of youth.
